Thinking About Thinking

Do you think your mind works as Kirby Ferguson outlines in his short video?

In Ferguson's video he suggests that there are 4 stages to creating an idea.

1. Create Boundaries (find a specific topic for your idea)

2. Consume Everything (gather resources and research)

3. Digest Research (arrange ideas, fill yourself with knowledge)

4. Drop it (take a break from the idea)

I believe that my mind does not follow these steps chronologically. i like to think of my brain as the world from Alice in Wonderland as a lot of times my thoughts don't make sense, but in the end when it all comes together it does.

When planning large art projects my mind would follow steps 1-3 of Ferguson's model. however it does the opposite of step 4 and continuously mulls over ideas relating to the topic.

How do ideas ‘occur’ for you?

For generating ideas quickly I think of experiences, images and sounds relating to the topic and make a combination of past experiences and current ideas to generate an idea.

Many of the topics I choose my paintings to be about I have already gathered prior knowledge or experiences before as it is easier for me to use them.

Do they come ‘fully formed’?

When generating ideas I sometimes experiences "overloads" where parts of possible ideas are poured into my brain. When this happens its often hard to sieve through all the ideas and I often categorise them in my head to go through them faster. I often mix two or more ideas together to get an initial/final idea

Do they change as you work on them and refine them?

When ideas come into my head, often times there are specific elements of the idea I like and other that I do not. When this occurs I take the elements I do like form many ideas and try to combine them. From there onwards I pick and choose parts depending on the elements I like or think are practical.

Are they ‘foggy and indistinct’ and then become more definite as you work with them?

Sometimes my ideas can be foggy, but with continuos thought the fog is soon blown away and reveals "fireworks" AKA my idea. However many times as I am working on  my final piece my ideas would still change add I would need to add or take away elements from the piece.
